VOL. 3 SAN JOAQUIN ROUTE
55 Minutes #CAN-SPSRV3-VHS $42.50

The star of this video is properly the San Joaquin Daylight itself. It was the first streamliner to operate through the rugged Tehachapi Mountains -- inaugurated July 4, 1941 -- surviving until Amtrak’s May 1, 197, takeover. It was also SP’s last steam powered passenger train -- pulled by 4400’s north of Bakersfield until September, 1956.

The train is followed from Oakland’s Mole to LA’s Union Passenger Terminal. After it meets with the “Sacramento Daylights” at Lathrop, it’s a fast run down the San Joaquin Valley to Bakersfield. The twisting rails over the formidable Tehachapi’s host a parade of SP and Santa Fe passenger and freight trains, powered by steam and diesel, with helpers to surmount the 2 1/2% grades. Many views of the famous loop -- one of railroading’s engineering marvels. See spectacular views of the devastation wrought by the 1952 7.5 earthquake and the repairs made to reopen the line.
