| Thunder on Cranberry 31 Mins #SRP-614B $29.95 This is the only photographic record of this extraordinary event. Here, the famous C&O Northern Type 614 climbs the steepest grade on the Chessie system - indeed the steepest main line grade in the eastern United States - with a full compliment of heavyweight passenger cars without assistance. This is the legendary Cranberry grade in West Virginia: 2.67%. Although far more difficult than the better known Sand Patch and 17 mile grades, it was rarely photographed because of its location in a hidden pocket without roads or human settlement. There are 46 run pasts in this inaccessible location as 614 is slowed to a walk. The blasts from the stack are slower than the human breath, but the engine never falters. Included in the same tape are a run at the opposite side of the Cranberry mountain grade, the 17 mile 2.2% to Terra Alta with a fan trip. You are pacing within a few feet of the drivers as the engine marches a steady 10 MPH to the summit. Also included on this tape is the engine blasting over both Sand Patch and Streets Run grades. We know of no other recording of ANY steam engine on the Streets Run grade. There is more eyeball to eyeball pacing on each of them. There are 96 run pasts in all. Color When purchased together with 614A: Thunder In the Alleghenies, the two tapes will show you engine 614 climbing every single one of the major railroad grades on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. back |
