It was well below zero when he captured a volcano plume of winter exhaust against a steely blue. This film has switchers, Q–4s, Streamlined Pacifics and both B&O and C&O mallets, but it concentrates on the culmination of B&O steam locomotive design: The T–3 Mountain. Follows the rails across Ohio from Willard to Garrett with the changing seasons and tours a division point when it was all steam. It paces the steam powered, streamlined ‘Cincinnatian’, shows you branch line operation, even has wrecks. After a look at the EM–1 mallet, it moves to the C&O for comparison with the giant 2–6–6–6s.
