| The City of Los Angeles 45 Mins #SRP-COLA $29.95 Union Pacific Historical Collection Starts in Los Angeles, the sky so clear it’s almost possible to touch the San Gabriel mountains from the steps of Union Station. Tracks the City of Los Angeles from the ground as it buckles down to Cajon Pass with 5 roaring E units. Continues from Ogden, Utah, as the streamliner clings to the canyon wall above the boiling Weber river. The snow deepens as it transits the Gateway. Just beyon Echo, the train starts the climb to Aspen Tunnel in earnest and finally tops out some 3000ft above Ogden. Shots alternate between on board and on the ground. The train crosses four hours of emptiness from Green River to Laramie at speeds of 90 miles an hour. Then under the black roils of a coming storm, it climbs Sherman Hill and continues down to Cheyenne. The last 10 minutes of this tape are dedicated to what was to have been the final run of 8444 in 1970. It shows the engine and three passenger cars (one a brass railed observation), diving into one of the worst blizzards ever experienced on Sherman Hill. All shots from the ground. back |
