As It Used To Be

Begins with Southern Pacific’s official “Farewell to Steam” - a two day trip across the Sierras. Six days before her boiler time expired, GS 6 4460 was called to lead what was intended to be the final movement of steam anywhere on the Southern Pacific system. The special was assigned to run as second section of the famed Overland Limited Westbound. Upon her return to Sacramento Shops, before the firebox was even cold, they severed her rods with a cutting torch to make sure steam could never again run on SP tracks. Mac Owen was there to cover this dramatic trip, unassisted in either direction except where a bearing runs hot. This tape also covers another anniversary run: the SP’s diamond stack Centennial locomotive over Altamont Pass.

Will Whittaker’s study of the Daylight locomotive follows: The Coast and Valley Daylights, of course, but much more. In the Tehachapis, over the Sierras, and across the Nevada desert. He caught all aspects of the famed GS 4: all color, all black. With skirts and without. On freights, commuters, fan trips, football specials, double-heading with F-7s, Mountains, Pacifics, and cab-forwards. Hauling or doubled with such name train legends as The Gold Coast, The Overland, The San Joaquin Daylight, even The City of San Francisco ! Closes with 4449 heading for Railfair 1981 with the first cars in Daylight orange: storming the Cascades, snaking down to Dunsmuir and wide open on the Valley floor. Color
